Understanding insurance requirements for Massage envy franchise owners

Owning a Massage Envy franchise means running a business that combines hands-on wellness services, employees, members, and a physical location. Each of those carries risk, and your insurance program is what stands between an unexpected claim and your business's future. Insurance isn't just a box to check at signing; it deserves a clear understanding of what you're required to carry, why, and what to watch for.

Why the Requirements Exist

Massage Envy's franchise system sets minimum insurance requirements for every location. These protect you, your clients, and the brand. A single claim, whether a slip in the lobby, an injury allegation after a session, or a misconduct accusation, can threaten a franchise that isn't properly insured. The requirements set a baseline so every owner has a foundation of protection.

These requirements are clearly established and we’re happy to help you always stay in compliance.

Core Coverages to Understand

  1. Sexual Misconduct Liability (SML). This is one of the most important, and most misunderstood, coverages for massage businesses. Allegations of inappropriate conduct can arise regardless of their merit and defending them is costly. Many general and professional liability policies exclude or sharply limit these claims, which is why dedicated SML coverage matters. Owners should understand how their policy defines a claim, why the sex of the therapist matters, what the policy limits are, what their per claim deductible is and whether defense costs reduce those limits.

  2. Professional Liability (PL). Massage and skin care are professional services. Professional liability responds to claims that a service caused injury or harm, such as a strained muscle or a reaction to a skin care product. For a business whose core product is hands-on treatment, this is fundamental coverage.

  3. Commercial General Liability (CGL)/ Property and Business Income. These coverages relate to third-party bodily injury and property damage on your premises, the classic "slip and fall" claim, along with certain other liabilities that arise from operating a business open to the public. Additionally, your build-out, equipment, and furnishings represent a significant investment. Property coverage protects those assets, and business income coverage can help replace lost revenue if a covered event forces you to close temporarily. Even completely unanticipated situations like sewer backups may be covered under this policy.

  4. Workers' Compensation. If you have employees, most states require workers' compensation coverage. Massage therapists and estheticians do physically demanding work, and repetitive-motion injuries are a real exposure.

  5. Employment Practices Liability (EPLI). With a team of therapists, estheticians, and front-desk staff, claims of wrongful termination, discrimination, or harassment are a real possibility. EPLI responds to claims brought by employees.

Important Considerations

Certificates and additional insured status. Your landlord and Massage Envy may require certificates of insurance with specific wording. Errors or lapses here can create problems with your lease or franchise compliance.

Changes in your business. Adding staff, expanding services, relocating, or acquiring another location can all affect your coverage needs. Your policy should keep pace with your business.

Know who to call when something happens. When a client complaint or incident occurs, how quickly and correctly it's reported can matter. You should have a broker who answers the phone and walks you through the process.

Why Your Broker Matters

Massage Envy franchise owners choose from a small group of authorized brokers. Coverage is one part of the decision; the other is the people behind it. You want a broker who understands how a Massage Envy location operates day to day, responds when you have questions, and is there when a claim comes in.
