Adding an additional Massage Envy location is a milestone, and it changes your insurance picture dramatically. More locations mean more therapists, more clients, more leases, and more exposure. Coverage that worked well for one location may not fit a growing operation. Here's what multi-location owners should understand.
Sexual Misconduct Liability (SML): The Exposure That Grows Fastest
For massage businesses, SML is the coverage that deserves the most attention, and it becomes even more important as you grow. Every additional therapist and every additional session increase probabilities of allegations, regardless of their merit.
Retention levels increase too. Multiple franchise location owners have a corresponding increase in retentions (deductibles) on some coverages when certain thresholds are reached. Be sure you know where you stand. We can help you decode this situation and be prepared for possible outcomes.
Consistent practices across locations. Hiring, background checks, training, and incident reporting should be consistent at every location. Insurance companies look at how you manage risk, and inconsistent practices can create problems both at claim time and at renewal.
Professional Liability (PL)
Professional liability responds to claims that a massage or skin care service caused injury. If one location offers services the others don't, make sure your carrier knows it.
Structuring Your Coverage
Entity structure. Many owners operate each location under a separate legal entity. Your policies need to name each entity correctly. A mismatch between the entity on the lease or franchise agreement and the named insured on the policy can cause problems with certificates and, more seriously, with claims.
Schedule of locations. Every location should be properly listed on each applicable policy. When you open or acquire a new location, notify us before you open the doors, not after.
Potential Challenges
One claim can affect everything. When locations share policies, a claim at one location may affect renewal terms for all of them. That's one more reason advocacy and accurate presentation of your business at renewal are important.
Certificate management. Multiple landlords and franchise requirements mean multiple certificates, each with specific wording. Errors or delays can create compliance issues.
Keeping coverage current. Growth happens quickly. Staff changes, new services, relocations, and acquisitions all need to be reflected in your coverage.
The Value of the Right Broker
Managing insurance across multiple locations takes attention to detail and a broker who understands how your business operates. You need someone who knows your locations, keeps your coverage organized, and advocates for you with the insurance company when claims or renewals require it.
